Live in the ‘Now’

Every morning I wake up and I’m just stuck there in my bed. I can’t move my legs. I can’t sit up and I do not even have the strength to lift my shoulders off the bed. My left hand is cramped up into a ball. My elbow is always stiff and sore from an […]

BEST ADVICE FOR COLLEGE

This was a way for high school students to be able […]

A SECOND CHANCE

by Adam Helbling on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 3:23pm ·  What would you do if you were given a second chance at life? At what expense would you give to have that second chance? Would you give an arm or a leg? Would you give your sight or your hearing? I was given this second chance […]

Finally a Smile on My Face

I moved back down to Columbus on January 2nd of this year. For the entire year prior I spent a quarter of it in the hospital and the rest of it back home in my house in Stow near Akron, OH (the home of LeBron James). During that 1st year I was absolutely miserable and […]

Brutus on My Segway

Brutus on My Segway

This is a picture of me with the Ohio State University mascot Brutus on my Segway. In the fall of 2008 I decided that it would be a good idea to take out a $5000 loan to buy a Segway. As I found out later, when I ended up in the psych ward, excessive spending is all part of a manic episode. In less than 2 months I spent around $14,000 with credit cards and loans. Let’s just say that at least I was not approved for the $30,000 loan I applied for a few days earlier for a 2004 BMW M3. If you or anyone you know has bipolar disorder they can definitely talk to me about it. I’ve experienced the worst of it and it has changed my life forever.

Visiting the Slalom Course

Visiting the Slalom Course

Last year I went for a ride on the boat at my godfather’s lake. We sped down through the slalom course and then took a ride back to the dock. As we went through the course I could see myself rounding every buoy This is a and it was just too much for me. Last year I could not even be around the sport of waterskiing because it just killed me to think that I would never be able to do it again. A few weeks ago I took a ride down to the slalom course on the Scioto River. I sat on a fishing wall and watched as a skier went through the course. Unlike a year earlier, I was actually able to watch with a smile on my face. I wanted to give so many tips to the skier. Maybe I should get back into coaching. I’m just happy that I was able to watch what I love with a smile on my face.

“Life can change directi…

“Life can change directions
Even when you ain’t planned it
All you can do is handle it
The worst thing you could do is panic
Use it to your advantage
Avoid insanity, manage to conquer
Every obstacle, make impossible possible
Even when winning’s illogical
Losing’s still far from optional”

This is Me… (Before the Accident… Obviously)

This is Me... (Before the Accident... Obviously)

Before my accident I spent most of my time on the water. Here is a picture of me when I was able bodied. This is called wake surfing. You get on a boat with a large wake and start on this small surfboard. You’re holding onto a short rope and you then pull yourself in front of the wake. Once you get some momentum going you throw the rope into the boat and then surf the wave. You can surf until the boat runs out of gas. The longest I ever lasted before my legs gave out was 8 1/2 min. It’s actually not very tough to learn and the boat is going very slow so it is not dangerous. Another reason you should get out on the water!
